Gjøra/Vollan serves as the starting point for trips to Vollasetra cabin – a self-service cabin owned by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT), and on to the majestic Ekkertind mountain with its dizzying views over Sunndalen. There are also trails leading into Storlidalen valley, where visitors can find accommodation and a well-developed trail network further into Trollheimen. The Driva River flows through Gjøra, and it is one of Norway’s most popular salmon rivers.
Gjøra is located at the upper end of Sunndalen valley and serves as an approach to two beautiful protected areas: Trollheimen Protected Landscape and Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park, along with its associated protected landscapes. For visitors wishing to venture into Trollheimen, the starting points are either Sunndalsporten or Vollan.
At Sunndalsporten, there is a bus stop, shop, tourist information, toilet, shower, parking and electric car charging. It is possible to start your trip here, but you can also walk the path along the Rv70 road to Vollan and continue your journey from there.
The exit to Vollan is located 3.5 km further north along the Rv70 road, so many visitors often choose to park there for trips to Vollasetra, Ekkertind, and Storlidalen. This is where the waymarked DNT trail to Vollasetra begins, continuing on to Storlidalen. Parking, toilets and tourist information can be found at Vollan.
If you wish to visit both of the mountainous areas at Gjøra, you can find more information for visitors to Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park here.
