Cultural monuments
Trollheimen is an area rich in history and cultural heritage, with traces of ancient hunting and trapping cultures, Stone Age settlements, Sámi reindeer herding, and summer mountain farming.
Biodiversity
Trollheimen is located in a transitional climate zone between the coast and the inland area, where there are overlapping distribution habitats for eastern/western species and northern/southern species.
Grazing livestock
Summer mountain farming and haymaking on uncultivated land have had long traditions in the Trollheimen region – from the 17th and 18th centuries up until the mid-20th century. Active summer farming currently takes place at five mountain farms in Trollheimen, where there are still important grazing areas for sheep, goats, cattle and reindeer. Grazing helps maintain the cultural landscape, contributing to a variety of natural habitats, which in turn benefits biodiversity.
Reindeer husbandry
Few things make a greater impression than encountering a herd of reindeer majestically moving along a mountain ridge – and the chances of seeing reindeer in Trollheimen are pretty good. Domesticated reindeer husbandry has a long history in these mountainous areas and is the very cornerstone of the South Sámi culture.
