Nature and culture

Trollheimen has a rich history, and the protected landscape is still used for grazing, summer mountain farming, reindeer herding, hunting and fishing. The mountainous area is unique in many ways, as it is located in a transitional climate zone and has distinctive geological features. Visitors can therefore experience a variety of landscapes and habitats, as well as a rich diversity of plants and animals. The area has been used by people since the Stone Age and still has a vibrant cultural landscape.

Grazing livestock

Summer mountain farming and haymaking on uncultivated land have had long traditions in the Trollheimen region – from the 17th and 18th centuries up until the mid-20th century. Active summer farming currently takes place at five mountain farms in Trollheimen, where there are still important grazing areas for sheep, goats, cattle and reindeer. Grazing helps maintain the cultural landscape, contributing to a variety of natural habitats, which in turn benefits biodiversity.

Reindeer husbandry

Few things make a greater impression than encountering a herd of reindeer majestically moving along a mountain ridge – and the chances of seeing reindeer in Trollheimen are pretty good. Domesticated reindeer husbandry has a long history in these mountainous areas and is the very cornerstone of the South Sámi culture.
